About me:

I’ve been reading ravenously ever since the written word first captured my imagination as a child. One of the first books I remember reading recreationally was The Swiss Family Robinson, and in 6th grade there was a book I liked so much that I stole it from school—The Sword and the Circle, a compilation of Arthurian legends and the first book in that trilogy. As I got older, I simultaneously tended to a growing interest in history, chivalry, and Catholicism—and consequently fell in love with the likes of Mark Twain, Sigrid Undset, Cervantes, and C.S Lewis.

I’m very fortunate in that I grew up with a creative family; my aunt Jodi is a talented author, my great-grandfather Roger before her as well, and my mother was always an avid reader while my pops has been creative in other ways, always cooking new recipes or sculpting things out of wood.

Without these people, I would be nothing. And most importantly—we were created by the ultimate Creator in His image, and I firmly believe we were created to be creative.

My greatest hope is that someone out there will read something of mine and enjoy it enough to be moved to create something new in turn.

Creation is both the journey and the destination.

“The Soul Giveth its Blood.”

Enid doesn’t get to live a normal life.

Abducted by strange monks from her parents, she was raised under the expectation that she would either save the known world from an unspecified threat, or die trying like the Soulkeeper before her.

The price for deliverance can only be paid through blood, sweat, and tears.

Two orphans, a tyrannical Queen, a curse, a dangerous romance, and a well-intentioned spell gone horribly wrong.

This is her story.

Enid as a story is, in a word, distinctive. Tired of reading fantasy books that didn’t scratch that “it” itch for me, I set out to write the story I wish I could read. Most contemporary fantasy has always felt surface-level and bland to me—I never liked the generic D&D-type story set in poorly-represented pseudo-medieval-England, with fantasy races taken from Tolkien and more focus on world-building magic systems than the characters.

I found escapism through beautifully-written historical novels, such as Recollections of Joan of Arc by Mark Twain and Kristin Lavransdatter by Sigrid Undset. These stories and characters felt so much more real and meaningful to me than your average fantasy book, and so I was moved to write a fantasy story that—while technically set in another world—is so deeply steeped in historical fact and mythology that it feels authentic and real, and Enid is a story that will read more like historical fiction than your average Tolkien ripoff. An astounding amount of research has gone into this novel, and it overflows and drips from the pages once you’ve become immersed in its world.

Another thing I set out to do was to include a romantic subplot that doesn’t glorify abuse or pathological behaviors; I feel strongly that most fiction today has a lurid habit of including relationships which are inane, gross, and unwholesome, so this is my modest contribution to remedying that.

While this story isn’t grimdark like Game of Thrones or The Prince of Nothing, it does have its moments, so this isn’t a novel for those looking for purely uplifting or happy stories. But if you’re unsure whether to give it a read, simply click the link below to get a taste.
